About the Surgical Intensive Care Unit :

  • We are the largest surgical intensive care unit in the state of  Iowa.
  • Annual admissions of more than 2000 patients.
  • Intensivist coverage 24 hours a day in agreement with the Leapfrog Consortium recommendations.
  • Active ongoing clinical research and ACGME accredited fellowship program.

The goals of the SICU are:

  • To provide superb medical care.
  • To develop a supportive atmosphere for the patient's families.
  • To foster professional medical education.
  • To gain new medical knowledge to improve care of the critically ill.

Each individual who works in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit has an important role. We encourage an atmosphere of mutual respect, effective communication, with decisions based on what is in the best interest of the patients in the ICU.
