The Center for Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia is run by the Department of Anesthesia and is staffed by physicians, nurses, psychologists, and other health care professionals trained in pain medicine. All physicians have staff privileges at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and are also faculty members in the College of Medicine. Medical students, resident physicians, and fellows also participate in patient care under the supervision of a staff physician.
Our objective is to provide pain management for patients with prolonged, treatment-resistant pain. Patients have frequently been evaluated and treated elsewhere without success before they are seen here. Evaluation and treatment programs utilize an interdisciplinary approach that includes specialists in pain medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, oncology, gynecology, pediatrics, and alternative medicine, amongst others. We offer no guarantee of pain relief but work with patients and their families to explore options designed to maximize quality of life and overall function.
