The Anesthesia Presurgical Evaluation Clinic is operated by the Department of Anesthesia and is staffed by physicians, A.R.N.P.s, nurses, and other health care professionals trained in Anesthesia.  All physicians have staff privileges at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and are also faculty members in the College of Medicine.  Medical students, residents, and student registered nurse anesthestists (SRNAs) also participate in patient care under the supervision of a staff physician.

What we do:

  • Educate patients regarding anesthesia options, along with possible risks and complications.

  • Have all pertinent information that the anesthesia team needs in a place where they can access it readily.

Why we do it:

  • Provide and improve customer service as evidenced by patient satisfaction & understanding of their health issues.

  • Improve cost-effectivesness of the pre-operative process:

    • Optimize pre-operative testing practices

    • Eliminate OR cancellations caused by incomplete pre-operative evaluations

    • Incresase collaborative communication within the pre-operative health care team.

  • Educate anesthesia personnel and other UIHC departments regarding pre-surgical evaluation through data collection and research.
